Visual Guide: Breast Self-Examination at Home: 5 Simple Steps

Most cysts do not require immediate treatment and are managed through regular check-ups, ultrasound, and medical follow-up.
Study's Time: 5 minutes

If you experience pain or an enlarged breast cyst, your doctor may recommend needle aspiration or pain-relieving medications, which can restore physical comfort and improve sexual well-being.

The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness

Every October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month a time dedicated to raising public awareness, supporting patients, and emphasizing the importance of early detection through screening and education.

According to updated guidelines from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), performing regular breast self-exams is not officially recommended as a formal screening method.
Studies have not shown that self-examination reduces breast cancer mortality rates; instead, it may lead to unnecessary anxiety or biopsies.

✅ However, what’s truly essential is being aware of your breasts’ normal condition. Every woman should know the usual look and feel of her breasts and consult a doctor immediately if any changes occur.

Changes You Should Take Seriously

If you notice any of the following, contact your doctor:

  • A new lump or swelling in the breast or underarm

  • Skin dimpling or wrinkling

  • Unusual nipple discharge (milky, yellow, clear, or bloody)

  • Changes in breast color or peeling skin

  • Persistent pain or noticeable change in breast size or shape

Step 1: Visual Inspection in the Mirror

Stand in front of a mirror with your hands on your hips. Look carefully at the size, shape, and color of your breasts.
Watch for any visible changes such as dimples, redness, or swelling.
Raise your arms and check again from different angles turning slightly side to side can help spot differences.

Step 2: Raising the Arms

Lift both arms above your head and inspect your breasts again for skin dimpling or asymmetry.
If changes appear only on one side, they should be evaluated.

Step 3: Checking for Nipple Discharge

If you are not breastfeeding, any discharge from the nipples is abnormal.
During a shower (when skin is softer), gently press each nipple.
If you notice yellow, bloody, or milky fluid, inform your doctor.

Step 4: Lying Down Examination

Lie on your side, place the arm of that side under your head, and with the first three fingers of your other hand, use circular motions to examine the entire breast area from the collarbone to the lower breast and from the armpit to the center of the chest.
Gradually increase pressure to feel deeper layers.

Step 5: Sitting or Standing Examination

Repeat the same movements while sitting or standing.
Move from the top to the bottom of the breast and from the center to the armpit to check for lymph nodes.
If you feel something unusual, like a hard lump or pea-sized nodule, consult your doctor.

Important Notes and Timing

  • The best time for a breast exam is a few days after your period ends.

  • If you do not have periods, choose a fixed day each month.

  • The goal is body awareness, not anxiety.

Breast Cysts and Their Impact on Sexual Function

According to The Journal of Separation Science:

  1. Breast cysts are usually benign
They are fluid-filled lumps that are typically harmless.
On their own, benign cysts usually have no direct physiological effect on sexual function.

  2. Psychological and Physical Impact
In some women, cysts can cause pain, tenderness, or discomfort, leading to reduced sexual comfort or desire.

  3. Medical Recommendations
Most cysts do not require immediate treatment and are managed through regular check-ups, ultrasound, and medical follow-up.
If pain or swelling occurs, the doctor may suggest needle aspiration or pain relief medications, which can restore physical comfort and enhance sexual experience.
