Every November, the world observes Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM) a global initiative aimed at raising awareness, promoting early detection, and supporting millions of men affected by prostate cancer worldwide.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men and a leading cause of mortality, especially for men over 50. Thanks to medical advances and early detection, survival rates and successful treatment outcomes have improved significantly.
This article is brought to you by Dr. Saeed Behckam, clinical psychologist, counselor, and sex therapist serving clients in Iran (Tehran) and Canada (Toronto, Richmond Hill, and Vancouver).
History of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
This campaign started in the early 1990s and grew with the support of organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Its core objectives are:
✅ Raise awareness about risks
✅ Encourage men to get screened
✅ Support research and improve treatment quality
PCAM provides a platform for education, conversation, and hope for patients and their families.
Understanding Prostate Cancer
The prostate is a small gland located beneath the bladder, playing a key role in the male reproductive system. Cancer occurs when its cells grow uncontrollably.
Some prostate cancers grow slowly, while others progress rapidly making early detection crucial.
Global Statistics (2022)
📌 1,467,854 new prostate cancer cases worldwide
📌 397,430 deaths from prostate cancer globally
📌 India: 37,948 new cases and 18,386 deaths
These figures highlight the importance of awareness and regular screening.
